Today, drive to Braga, the capital of the lush region Minho. Born Roman, the archbishopric of Braga was founded as early as the 4th century, making the diocese of Braga older than the country itself. Visit the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, just east of Braga. The church at the top of the hillside can be reached via a water-operated funicular railway, dating back to 1882, or a baroque stairway framed by chapels and flowerbeds.
