Road Trip to Turrialba

In the morning, your guide will collect you from your hotel and accompany you for the rest of your journey through Costa Rica. Your first destination is Turrialba, located in the lush Southern Highlands. This area remains an off-the-beaten-path gem and serves as an alternative gateway to the Caribbean. The route takes you through Cartago, the former capital of Costa Rica. In Cartago, you’ll visit one of the country’s most significant religious sites, the Virgin of the Angels Basilica. This stunning Catholic church is a key pilgrimage site for many Costa Ricans, as it houses “La Negrita,” the Black Madonna and patroness of Costa Rica. You will hear about her miraculous appearance and her impact on the lives of the local community. Next, you’ll ascend into the mountains to explore Irazu Volcano National Park. Irazu is Costa Rica’s largest and highest active volcano, featuring a striking emerald-green crater lake surrounded by diverse flora and fauna, including various bird species, coatis, armadillos, and mountain rabbits. Take a warm sweater and raincoat for the visit to the chilly heights, with an altitude of 3,432 meters. The day concludes in the scenic area around the small town of Turrialba. This region is rich in agriculture, with Arabica coffee plantations, sugar cane fields, and macadamia nut groves, all set against the backdrop of the Turrialba Volcano. The area is also known for its dramatic rivers, including the renowned Pacuare River, famous for whitewater rafting. Upon arriving in Turrialba, you can unwind for the rest of the day in your hotel, or take a look around Turrialba.
