Taste of Lisbon
Visit the famous bakery which produces the iconic 'Pasteis de Belem'. At the beginning of the 19th Century, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down and the clergy and labourers expelled. In order to make a living, a clergyman from the monastery baked and offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop - these became known as ‘Pastéis de Belém’. During that period, the area of Belém was considered far from the city of Lisbon and mainly accessed by steam-boats. At the same time, the grandeur of the monastery and the Torre de Belém (the Belém Tower) attracted visitors who soon grew used to savouring the delicious pastries originated in the monastery. Pastéis de Belém were first baked in 1837 following the ancient ‘secret recipe` from the monastery. Passed on and known exclusively by the master confectioners who hand-crafted the pastries in the ‘secret room’, this recipe remained unchanged to this day.
Clube de Fado is located in the heart of Alfama, one of the best Fado experiences in Portugal. Even without understanding the lyrics, this traditional Portuguese song brought from distant shores by sailors, plays to your heartstrings.
