Picturesque Essaouira
After breakfast you will start the tour from the old fishing harbour. This is a charming active old fortified port that the Portuguese built and named Mogador in the 16th century to take advantage of the Trans-Saharan trade routes. The city was rebuilt in 1760 and named Essaouira by the Sultan, later a great number of foreigners as well as a big part of the Jewish community in Morocco as it became Morocco’s international port and trading centre. You will explore the impressive fortifications consisting of an interesting mixture of Portuguese and Moroccan military architecture. Our guided tour will take you to the spice souks, the jewellery market, different artisan markets and the carpentry workshops devoted to cedar and thuya cabinet making. Essaouira has attracted artists and musicians from different parts of the world and you will see some of their works in the different art galleries of the city. You will end our walking tour of Essaouira in the port with its stalls of freshly caught barbecued fish and you may want to end the tour here and stay for a sea food lunch. The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy a camel ride on the beach.
