Accra to Lomé: Markets & History

After breakfast in Accra, the drive east toward Lomé takes about four hours, crossing the border into Togo and arriving in the capital around midday. Lunch at a local restaurant offers a first taste of the city before heading into the Grand Marché, a sprawling collection of indoor stalls and open-air vendors selling textiles, spices, and household goods. A short walk away stands the Sacred Heart Cathedral, built by the Germans in 1901, its red and white Gothic structure still a striking presence in the city center. The visit continues at the National Museum, where displays of traditional instruments, masks, and historical photographs offer a glimpse into Togo’s cultural and colonial past. Later, the Akodessewa witches market presents a different kind of experience - rows of tables stacked with dried animal parts, herbs, and ritual objects used in traditional medicine and spiritual practices, with some vendors offering consultations. The day ends at a nearby artisan village where craftspeople work on weaving, woodcarving, leather goods, and basketry, each piece shaped by hand with skill passed down through generations.
