Manhyia Palace, Cultural Center, Kejetia Market, KNUST University

Today begins with a visit to Manhyia Palace, official seat of the Asantehene, King of the Ashanti. The museum here provides a clear and direct look at the structure, authority, and legacy of the Ashanti kingdom. From there, we continue to the National Cultural Centre, located in one of Kumasi’s oldest areas. The Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and the surrounding craft stalls offer insight into Ashanti art and craftsmanship. We then head to Kejetia Market, one of the largest open-air trading spaces in West Africa. It’s a dense network of stalls where sellers operate throughout the day and night. This is an opportunity to observe daily activity in Kumasi and perhaps find something to take home. After lunch at a local restaurant, we stop at the Okomfo Anokye Sword. Set in the grounds of the city’s hospital, this sword is tied to a key moment in Ashanti history and is said to be impossible to remove from the earth. Before returning to our accommodation, we visit Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana’s leading institution for science and engineering. Dinner can be enjoyed at your hotel or at a local venue with live music.
