Boating the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge
A bilingual nature guide will pick you up at your hotel and accompany you on a full day excursion to the Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve, near the northern border town of Los Chiles. The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important reserves for bird watching and year-round observation of wildlife in Costa Rica. It is a wetland area of almost 10,000 hectares, which in the rainy season is flooded by the Rio Frio. After a welcome drink and snack, you will board a comfortable pontoon boat and slowly and silently navigate your way through what is considered one of the most important conservations sites in the world. Made up of wetlands, rainforest and swampland there are more than 200 species of bird that come to this one area. The most famous being the endangered Jabiru Stork which is the tallest flying bird in Latin America. If you're here during the dry season (February-April) you will have a chance of seeing them. But you can also very much appreciate Tiger Herons, Woodstorks, Kingfishers, amongst others. If you're not such a fan of birds, then don't worry, as you silently cruise the Rio Frio, this area will reveal all kinds of wildlife from capuchin monkeys, sloths and iguanas to, river turtles, caiman and the basilisk, also called Christ Lizard as it can walk on water. Caño Negro will provide you with some amazing photo opportunities so make sure your camera is fully charged! Following your wildlife tour, you will be served a delicious typical lunch at a restaurant located on the riverbank of the Rio Frío, before returning to your hotel.
