Visit the cave town of the Golden Age
Today, we visit Samtskhe-Javakheti region, as the gateway to the country, it was fortified with many grand castles, One of the most impressive examples of this is Khertvisi Fortress (10th century), the antiquity of this fortress is confirmed by historical sources from the period of Alexander the Great. We will stop to take photos and continue on our way to visit Vardzia – the magnificent cave town of the Golden Age. The cave complex stretching over half a kilometer once consisted of some 3000 caves and was one of the best examples of Georgia’s renaissance. It’s got a church hewn out in rock with amazing 12th century frescos. The complex also includes dwellings quarters, small halltype churches, refectories, wine cellars, etc. We will visit a local family near Vardzia and have delicious lunch with special cuisine from this region. Continue to Akhaltsikkhe and visit Rabath castle. Here in this recently renovated castle we`ll get aquainted with a rich history of the region and will travel in the past.
